How best to manage Rubus species (bramble) encroachment on grazing sites?

While speaking with colleagues from the LIFE ShepForBio project yesterday, one topic that came up was the management of bramble (Rubus spp.).

(For those interested in the project: LIFE ShepForBio project website )

In many regions, bramble encroachment can become a challenge for the management of open habitats and the achievement of conservation goals.

If bramble encroachment is an issue on your grazing sites, we would like to hear about your experiences:

  • Have you observed differences in the effectiveness of cattle, sheep, goats, horses, donkeys or mixed grazing systems in controlling bramble?
  • Under which conditions has grazing been successful in reducing bramble cover?
  • Are there situations where grazing alone is not sufficient?
  • What additional management measures have proven useful?
  • What outcomes have you observed from managing bramble on your sites?

We look forward to learning from experiences across different habitats, grazing systems, and regions.
